Elegant Amanoi Glass drinking glasses from Japan made with titanium, show how creativity can often be born from chance.
Amoni Glass now produces whiskey and wine glasses, along with Champagne glasses, which sell in boxed sets in the US for $59.99.
Titanium has a strong anti-erosive property equal to that of platinum or gold, and has a great affinity to the human body that is called “the gentlest metal to humans”. It is said that it is difficult for odours and dirt to adhere to it, and it breaks down unpleasant flavours and makes it smooth-tasting.
The idea was born from a single sheet of glass. An employee of the factory one day noticed a pile of glass shards which were being discarded as a byproduct of the production process. Taken by the material’s unique brilliance, he thought: “What if we could create drinking glasses so people could enjoy this beauty at home?”.
The company makes the glasses at its state-of-the-art factory in Shizuoka in Japan, which is equipped with space-age technology to apply high-purity titanium.
The hue of the titanium is shown by the reflection and refraction of light similar to rainbows and the aurora lights. In order to bring out that sparkle in the glass, they are polished by hand by skilled artisans. That means every glass is hand-polished rather than machine produced.
The radiance of the titanium mirror provides multiple expressions in a single glass, changing the various colours, such as the ruby of red wine or the amber of whiskey.
Other than whiskey glasses, we also have wine glasses and beer glasses. The company now offers a line up spanning 20 types of glass.
