Louis Vuitton candles with a striking resemblance to handbags go on sale next month.
The scented candles go on sale in time for the northern hemisphere winter, sold only in a set of four, retailing for US$185.
The reason the candles resemble handbags is that each has a camel-coloured leather carry handle, made from the same materials as a Louis Vuitton handbag strap, intended to make it easier (and safer) to move them from room to room. They also come with a gold lid to keep the dust off when they are not in use – and make a stunning decorative piece on any shelf. Newson designed the lid to double as a coaster for the candle to rest on while burning.
The ceramic candle holder was designed by Marc Newson while the scents were created by perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, who took his inspiration from nature.
Louis Vuitton says the candles will not be sold separately – only by the set. To make it easier for buyers to distinguish the candles – each has a different fragrance – each has a different coloured wick.
Belletrud’s scents were created for each season. The L’Air du Jardin was inspired by the spring scent of “the first rosebuds from the garden”. The Feuilles d’Or candle conjures memories of “scorched underbrush that permeates clothes during a walk in the woods”.
The winter scent, the Dehors Il Neige, smells like “the magic of snowflakes as they fall,” while summer is represented by the Île Blanche scent, inspired by “the warm island sun steeped in a veil of white cotton”.
The Louis Vuitton candles will be available from November 5 on the Louis Vuitton website and at select boutiques internationally.
