The new Merrell Gridway Collection of sneakers is described by the brand as the next step in its sustainability efforts.
All shoes in the Merrell Gridway Collection are made from recycled materials wherever possible and are built with a singular intent: to last.
The Merrell Gridway Collection features knit uppers and laces made from 100 per cent-recycled materials. The shoes’ footbeds are 50 per cent recycled, while removable EVA footbeds and EVA midsoles are made with 40 per cent recycled content from manufacturing scraps.
Exclusive to Merrell and used throughout the Gridway Collection, a Vibram EcoDura outsole is made from a minimum of 30 per cent post-industrial scrap rubber, adding a durable, high-quality compound that also reduces waste. EcoDura is Vibram’s best-performing recycled outsole on the market.
“At Merrell, we’re actively exploring ways to build great products more responsibly,” says Strick Walker, CMO at Merrell. “The Gridway Collection is a significant step forward.”
“It can be challenging to meet all the requirements consumers look for in sustainable shoes: recycled components and mindful manufacturing processes, yet durable and stylish,” says Johanna Koeberle, senior product director at Merrell. “With the feedback we’ve received, we feel the Merrell Gridway Collection merges all those needs in the way we intended. We look forward to continuing to expand the Gridway Collection in seasons to come.”
Coinciding with the launch of the Gridway Collection, Merrell donated US$10,000 to Keep America Beautiful, the national non-profit behind America Recycles Day, which takes place on and in the weeks surrounding November 15. Merrell hopes their donation will help elevate the importance of mindful recycling practices to consumers.
