It is said that laughter is the best medicine… and that’s the approach of Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau in creating a book which far from celebrates the ascendancy of Donald Trump to US president.
Featuring Doonesbury Sunday cartoons selected from the past three years, #SAD! chronicles the before, the after, and the now of Trump’s presidency. It tracks the shocking victory, the inept transition, and the tumultuous eternity of Potus’s first 500 days.
From ceaseless Twitter rants, bullying tirades, hyperbolic self-raves, and cringe-worthy misspellings, #SAD! presents a remarkably precise depiction of Potus behaviour and the unfortunate current political climate.
As Pulitzer Prize-winner Trudeau notes in the preface: “… just because two-fifths of the country are still in the thrall of a humongous con ‘like no one’s ever seen before,’ doesn’t mean that the rest of us – appalled, disenfranchised, writhing in embarrassment for our country – should forgo the comfort of laughter. At this benighted moment, it’s all we have.”
Trudeau’s depiction of Trump’s reign of error is intended to provide a respite for the three-fifths of the US population – and millions of foreigners, as well, we are sure – “who are stunned, dismayed, but vastly entertained”.
#SAD: Doonesbury in the Time of Trump by G B Trudeau is published by Andrews McMeel and goes on sale in September for US$16.99 (C$22.99 in Canada). It is a sequel to Yuge!: 30 Years of Doonesbury on Trump, which flew up the bestseller list.
