Artist and sculptor Allen Hirsch has created what he calls the “Butt-phone case” for the iPhone 7 Plus.
When you hold the phone it feels like you’re caressing a butt.
“Touching the buttocks is one of the most pleasant tactile and ergonomic experiences,” Hirsch says of his handiwork.
“As an artist I am acutely aware of the power of touch as this is the vehicle through which I project my thoughts and feelings on canvas. Touch is the most fundamental and honest form of communication; if you feel something and touch someone, they will feel it.”
The case has been released by HandL, which specialises in smartphone cases designed to be “a natural extension of your hand”. They feature a patented elastic and brace system that allows you to hold your device with just one or two fingers, freeing up your other hand and relieving the stress and discomfort of gripping.
Apparently, giving a phone a “butt” brings owners back in touch with touch. “Many of our relationships are now inside this little metal iPhone box and I want that touch experience to be meaningful.”
Hirsch says he spent many months passing his fingers over countless materials and surfaces, including fur, leather and glass, and tried many different foams that cushioned the fingers. But his thoughts returned to his experience with the human figure and the idea of merging the body with the phone as HandL already does.
A light went on… “Touching the buttocks has been one of the most pleasant tactile experiences I have known. It is ergonomic, soft and comfortable to rest one’s hand against. Juxtaposing the electronic screen and its ethereal digital world with the real world tactile goal of a buttocks became my obsession. I began the search for the perfect material for this; scouring stores, and running my hands over every kind of product and surface. I finally found something containing a particular mix of semi-liquid silicone (a material that is actually used in plastic surgery for buttocks) and knew this was it. I now consider this to be the first case to compete with the other (phone) side. Now, when you reach compulsively for your device and feel that butt, you might just be satisfied enough.”
The new HandL Maximus case for the iPhone 7 Plus sells for US$70 online.
