The world’s first-ever palm oil-free food and beauty subscription box was launched in Australia on August 19 – to coincide with International Orangutan Day.
An initiative of the Orangutan Alliance and Socially Conscious Club, the box contains 11 palm-oil free products including moisturisers, shampoos, soaps, scrubs, perfume and even a snack idea. The box sells for AU$60 but is valued at $120. Shipping is free.
The Orangutan Alliance is a Melbourne-based not for profit advocating the end of unsustainable palm oil in products through palm oil-free certification, research, campaigns and programs. It supports clear labelling of palm oil in all products to provide consumers with the choice to buy for environmental or health reasons. For every palm oil-free box sold, 30 per cent of the proceeds will be given to the Orangutan Alliance’s conservation partner – The Orangutan Project, which is helping save orangutans from extinction in Borneo and Sumatra.
The palm oil-free food and beauty box shows it is possible to find ingredient alternatives that don’t cause deforestation or threaten already-endangered species. The Orangutan Alliance will release palm oil-free subscription boxes in the US and Europe later this year, while the Australian one will remain on sale until the end of next month.
Unsustainable harvesting of palm oil is threatening the existence of almost 200 species throughout the world, including the Orangutan, which is listed as critically endangered. Almost 80 per ent of their natural habitat has now been destroyed by deforestation due to harvesting palm oil.
Palm oil is in about 50 per cent of packaged goods and accounts for 35 per cent of the world’s vegetable oil production.
The Orangutan Alliance income is invested in grassroots projects that promote conservation, education and reforestation programs. Brands that have joined Orangutan Alliance internationally include Australian-owned Hazelnut Spread Nuttvia and beauty brand Two-Winged Fruit, New Zealand-owned Pics Peanut Butter and UK palm oil-free beauty brand Bloomtown.
